Building Safe and Strong Neighborhoods: What Works?
Over the next few months neighborhood groups all over Huntington will be getting together to hold discussions about how to build Safe and Strong Neighborhoods. These discussions are sponsored by a coalition of organizations including the Neighborhood Institute, the Cabell County Substance Abuse Prevention Partnership, United Way of the River Cities, Create Huntington, the City of Huntington, Adopt Your Block, the Herald Dispatch, and the West Virginia Center for Civic Life. Last week we held training sessions for those interested in moderating the community discussions. Now it's time to focus on organizing the discussions and making them happen! Please review the information below.
- Is your neighborhood planning to hold a discussion? If so, please send details about the time and location to be included in the schedule published in the Herald Dispatch. Please send info to createhuntington@gmail.com. Any group is encouraged to hold a discussion: neighborhood associations, faith based organizations, book clubs, student groups, etc. The discussion can be in an existing group at a regularly scheduled meeting or one especially called for that purpose. Discussions should be held by mid-May.
- If you need help organizing a discussion or finding a moderator and/or recorder, contact createhuntington@gmail.com or call the United Way at (304) 523-8929.
- Click here to download a flyer you can use to publicize your discussion. (Just fill in the spaces with your group name, the time, date and location of your discussion.) Personal phone calls and e-mails are also a very effective way to get participation.
- Printed copies of the discussion guide, moderator’s agenda and questionnaire for your discussion can be picked up at the United Way, 820 Madison Avenue in Huntington, (304) 523-8929.
- Each group is asked to provide flip charts and markers for use during their discussion.
- Please be sure to type up the notes from your discussion and return them along with the completed questionnaires to the United Way by May 15th.
- Click to download the discussion guide, moderator’s agenda and questionnaire in electronic format.
Please forward this information to anyone you think would be interested in participating.
If you’re not able to host a discussion, please plan on attending one. The scheduled discussions will be published in the Herald Dispatch, or you can contact your Neighborhood Association to find out when their discussion will be held. Information is available on the City's website at www.cityofhuntington.com under Residents.
A Citywide Action Summit will be held on May 25th, 2010 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the St. Mary's Education Center (the old Big Bear on Fifth Avenue and 29th Street.) Please plan to attend!

What is the "New Economy"?*
The "new" economy is usually characterized by industry segments that produce and market intellectual property, are enabled by Internet commerce and have a global perspective.
Sometimes referred to as the "creative" economy, it includes industries such as engineering, software development, architectural design, graphic design, research and development, arts and culture, academic services and research, and other "idea-based" industries.
Elements of the "new" economy can help make "old" economy sectors such as manufacturing more competitive and efficient, and so lines can get blurred on the categories.
